An ocean of resources and opportunities...

The ocean represents more than 71% of our planet's surface, contains a wealth of economically important resources, and yet remains virtually unexplored.

We have always found excitement in exploration, and now the technology exists to embark upon a modern era of ocean exploration. These advances in technology, as well as our understanding of the ocean environment, are leading to exciting breakthroughs in transportation, communication, medical treatments, weather and climate prediction and renewable energy sources.

Discovering the best and most environmentally sound ways to utilize the ocean's vast resources requires that the next generation of ocean explorers have a strong foundation of science-based skills. High demand jobs in marine-related fields will be technology driven, rooted in math and science, and will require vision to find new frontiers.

In fourth grade, American students lead the world in science literacy, yet by 10th grade they are at the bottom of world science performance. Exciting sixth to eighth graders about science increases their competitive advantage and stimulates their interest in exploring their world.

The future of the world ocean depends upon our children, who will need both skills and curiosity to uncover the ocean's secrets.
